A packed crowd stands facing a bright light source at a large live event, with a few phones raised above the heads.

Blumhouse Atomic Monster premiered the trailer for The Exorcist: Martyrs at its BlumFest panel at New York Comic Con on Friday night, then unveiled its 2027 release slate.

In brief

  • Kristen Bell, Curry Barker, LaKeith Stanfield and David Harbour were among the guests, alongside Mike Flanagan, James Wan and Chiwetel Ejiofor, over two hours on stage.
  • Stanfield used his appearance to announce that Molepeople will open in theaters on Aug.
  • We’re moving really fast on that one,” Patrick said during the panel.

Kristen Bell, Curry Barker, LaKeith Stanfield and David Harbour were among the guests, alongside Mike Flanagan, James Wan and Chiwetel Ejiofor, over two hours on stage. Alongside the trailer, the studio teased Seasons, a RoboCop project and Molepeople, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

A panel built on a record year

The company arrived in New York with momentum. Two hits frame the year: Obsession is now the top-grossing release in Focus Features history, and Backrooms holds the same record at A24. Both pushed Blumhouse Atomic Monster past $1 billion at the worldwide box office for a second consecutive year. Producer and Blumhouse co-founder Jason Blum said at the panel:

“We want to work with filmmakers who never stop surprising you.”

Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster combined in 2024 to form the current company. Variety gives its scale as follows:

$10 billion+worldwide gross across the company’s output
250+movies and series produced
$1 billionworldwide box office this year, a second straight year at that level

Asked how projects get sorted between the two labels, Blum answered at the panel: “Whatever James doesn’t want, we do.”

The 2027 horror calendar

About halfway through the panel, the studio laid out its 2027 lineup. The Exorcist: Martyrs was listed without a date, and one August film was still untitled.

Molepeople gets its date on stage

Stanfield used his appearance to announce that Molepeople will open in theaters on Aug. 27, 2027, as reported by Variety. He stars opposite Ben Mendelsohn in a horror film about a man who descends into abandoned tunnels beneath New York City. Rob Savage directs from a script by Nathan Elston.

Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Paramount Primal are co-financing and co-producing the film, and Paramount will handle worldwide distribution.

Variety counts it as Stanfield’s third Blumhouse film, after a small part in 2014’s The Purge: Anarchy and a major one in Get Out.

Franchises move to streaming and comics

Not everything announced is headed to theaters. Wan said RoboCop is in development as a series for Amazon Prime, with original writer Edward Neumeier involved and Dan Stevens in the title role.

On the adaptation front, Craig Zobel was named director of Something Is Killing the Children, based on the comic by James Tynion IV and Werther Dell’Edera. Creator James Dickinson said at the panel that the story’s world has been built on Instagram for about seven years and has reached more than five million readers. He also left no doubt about the tone: “It’s called Something Is Killing the Children, and, you know, I promise you, there are kids who die.”

Earlier on Friday, IDW Dark and Blumhouse announced a Happy Death Day comic series written by Tim Seeley, arriving ahead of a third film in the time-loop franchise.

Indie games and internet horror

The studio also signed Matthew Patrick, known as MatPat and founder of the “Theory” channels on YouTube, to develop films drawn from indie video games and horror channels. The first project is a feature based on DreadXP’s indie game Amanda the Adventurer.

“We are currently in talks with writers and directors, so more is coming soon. We’re moving really fast on that one,” Patrick said during the panel.
