Marvel Announces Zodiac, a Live-Action Spy Series, for Disney+ in 2028
Shooting is due to start in London this spring and casting within weeks, but no plot, cast or link to existing Marvel characters has been confirmed.
Marvel Television has put a name and a year on its next live-action series. Zodiac, a spy thriller, is slated to reach Disney+ in 2028, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which covered Thursday’s New York Comic-Con panel at the Javits Center. Beyond the year, the platform and a logo, Marvel has shared very little.
In brief
- Zodiac , a spy thriller, is slated to reach Disney+ in 2028, according to The Hollywood Reporter , which covered Thursday’s New York Comic-Con panel at the Javits Center.
- IGN also notes that the series had already leaked a month earlier, as a side detail in a Hollywood Reporter story about Daredevil: Born Again.
- Cast, plot and an exact release date remain to be announced, and Marvel has not yet connected the series to any existing character.
What Marvel said about Zodiac
Brad Winderbaum, the Marvel Studios executive in charge of its streaming, TV and animated output, introduced the project by admitting the studio had hoped to keep it under wraps until the panel. Fans had learned of it a week earlier, he told the room. His pitch was brief: a spy thriller, a shoot in London starting this spring, a release on Disney+ in 2028, and casting beginning within a couple of weeks. Variety reports the same timetable and says the panel unveiled the series’ first logo.
That logo drew attention. The Hollywood Reporter says the artwork appeared to hint at a link to the SHIELD agency, and Winderbaum urged comics readers to study it closely because plenty is hidden inside. That is a tease, not a confirmation. IGN stresses that the plot and the cast are still unannounced and that Marvel has not said which of its heroes might appear. The outlet guesses that Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury could show up given his place in SHIELD, and that a 2028 debut might put the show after Avengers: Secret Wars. Both points are IGN’s speculation, not Marvel’s statements.
IGN also notes that the series had already leaked a month earlier, as a side detail in a Hollywood Reporter story about Daredevil: Born Again. The Hollywood Reporter adds that Zodiac is one of five shows it had previously reported to be in development.
A thinner live-action slate
Variety describes Zodiac as the first new live-action Marvel show announced since last year’s Ironheart. The trade outlet recalls that Wonder Man was canceled a few months after its January premiere, even though a second season had been ordered and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II had earned an Emmy nomination for the role. Daredevil: Born Again is due to end with a third season next year, and VisionQuest arrives on Oct. 14, closing a trilogy that began with WandaVision and Agatha All Along.
The rest of the panel
Marvel Zombies returns as three two-part specials. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the first, tied to The Winter Soldier, lands on Disney+ during next year’s Halloween season. The Fist of Konshu is planned for 2028, while The Last Guardian is dated Halloween 2029. Brian Andrews, who directed several What If episodes, is back behind the camera. Winderbaum declined to say who the Last Guardian is, calling the special gory yet “quite beautiful.”
- Daredevil: Cox, Ritter and Jones, three of the four Netflix-era Defenders, shared the stage and hinted at the third season. Mike Colter, who plays Luke Cage, was absent, and the panel joked that he was busy at work. Cox said the gathering felt like 2016 again. Asked about the show ending, he said he expected the Save Daredevil campaign to start up. A short clip showed Matt Murdock in a fight scene.
- VisionQuest: Creator Terry Matalas joined cast members Bettany, Hampshire, Mollica and Spader on stage ahead of a screening of the first episode. Spader plays Ultron again, and Hampshire said E.D.I.T.H. “now has a body.”
- Spider-Man: The animated Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man returns for its second season on Jan. 13, 2027. Creator Jeff Trammell said Peter is past the learning stage and faces bigger threats, among them Doctor Otto Octavius and Scorpion, plus new villains.
- X-Men ’97: A third season got a brief tease, with Winderbaum calling it incredible.
On the publishing side, new Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Stephen Wacker described a recent creators’ summit, and the panel announced a Webtoon collaboration plus a Marvel app due later this year that will hold the company’s whole library.
For now, Zodiac is a title, a genre, a city and a year. Cast, plot and an exact release date remain to be announced, and Marvel has not yet connected the series to any existing character.
