UNO Bus Incident

An incident occurred on the A1081 at around 08:25am on the 20th October 2014, between South Mimms and Barnet. Forty five people including some students of the University of Hertfordshire were injured. In a StudyNet post, Lorna Evans stated “We know that a number of our students were on board the bus and that some have been taken to local hospitals.”

The East of England Ambulance Service announced that no-one is thought to be critically injured however, 45 of the 87 involved were taken to hospital. Eight people were taken to hospital with suspected head, neck and other trauma injuries.

A 41-year old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

Six ambulances were sent to deal with the overturned bus along with an air ambulance, a hazardous area response unit, the fire service and the police.

Darren Meads, East of England Ambulance Service Trust’s Senior Locality Manager for North East Hertfordshire, attended the scene: “Although this incident involved a large number of potential patients, we had resources on scene quickly and were able to start assessing and treating those in need as soon as possible,” he said.

The bus was the 614 Uno service to Hatfield Business Park via Barnet. The company said in a statement it was co-operating with the emergency services.

The university also stated: While our immediate concern is with those who have been affected, some of the students who were on board the bus are back on campus. The University of Hertfordshire is aware that a number of students were travelling on an UNO bus involved in a road traffic incident this morning on the A1081 in Barnet. Members of the university community are being supported by the Office of Dean of Students.
