University of Hertfordshire re-awarded bronze award for commitment to gender equality

The Athena SWAN Bronze institutional status has been re-awarded to the University of Hertfordshire in recognition of its continued commitment to facilitating gender equality and providing an opportunity for progression and success for all.

The Advanced Higher Education’s Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005, primarily to recognise and encourage commitment to advancing the career opportunities for women in STEMM (science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine) positions in both higher education and research.

Additionally, both the Schools of Physics, Astronomy and Maths and Health and Social Work within the university have been awarded Silver Status amongst just 42 others that were successful, out of 82 submissions, at this level in the latest round.

Helen Davidson, Deputy Secretary and Registrar and Head of Corporate Services at the University of Hertfordshire, said:

‘These awards are a testament to the hard work of all our staff and I would like to thank them for their continued support. We are committed to tackling gender equality and are proud that our institution continues to hold a Bronze award and that two further Schools have achieved a Silver award.’

The University of Hertfordshire, within its application, successfully demonstrated a prolonged commitment to addressing unequal gender representation across academic disciplines and professional and support functions; removing obstacles faced by women; gender equality in academia, and tackling the gender pay gap – all of which are important factors to tackle.
