Anyone who knows me knows my passion for student media. It has a powerful potential and provides invaluable experience for the journalists of the future. Echoing these views is the Student Publication Association (SPA), who brings together student publications for support, training, and to share our successes.

Over Saturday and Sunday we met with other publications for networking, workshops and speaker sessions, but the highlight of the weekend goes to the SPA awards ceremony. This year Trident Media entered the awards for the first time, and we were ecstatic to have been shortlisted for six awards Best Sports Coverage (Matt Creasey)
Best Use of Digital Media for BlueMoon
We are proud to announce that we received Highly Commended for Best Use of Digital Media, for our Inner Sex Animal quiz & Sex Survey. A massive achievement considering a year ago we didn’t even have this website to make it possible! The other winners can be found here.

Our Vice President Communications & Media, Shannen Rock, said:
“It is the first time that we have attended the SPA National Conference after having got more involved with our regional officer and regional conferences this year. Not only was it an amazing conference in itself, I was so proud that the team was shortlisted for six awards and came away with Highly Commended for Best Use of Digital Media.”
In further good news, during the AGM on Sunday, our own Deputy Print Editor and next year’s Vice President Communications & Media, Brad Johnson, was elected as the new Marketing and Events Officer for SPA. Brad said,
“It is such an honour to be elected as the Marketing and Events Officer for 2015/16 by my fellow student journalists. I am excited to work with the rest of the team and build on the success of the current exec. Being involved with student development and being able to improve the experience and engagement in student journalism is something that I am so eager to do. Bring on the next year!”
Brad will join the new SPA committee which includes four other student journalists: Jem Collins, the current SPA South East Officer who took the role of Chair, Bree Allegretti, Jon May and Megan Downing.

Brad’s plans for next year include increasing sponsorship for both national and regional conferences as well as increase awareness of the SPA through creating partnerships with professional bodies and business
