Student-run fashion show raises money for charity

On Thursday 3rd ,March, Event Management students Nancy Lund, Alina Lin and Lauren Mainwaring watched their well-planned fashion show come to life.

In time for Europe Week (29th February – 4th March) the final-year students organised an event for their Event Project Module with the Study Abroad team at the University of Hertfordshire as their clients. Pitching such a unique event as a fashion show to the Study Abroad Department lead the trio to secure the go-ahead for their event with the aims of increasing awareness about Europe Week on both UH campuses; to building community engagement amongst staff, lecturers and students; to increase participation of students within the fashion show; and to raise funds and awareness for the charity War Child.

The fashion show was marketed as ‘Changing Faces of Europe’ to address the major role the fashion industry plays across European cities.

The fashion show enhanced the UH community as it showcased a selection of pieces from Level 5 Fashion students that were based on the theme of war. Lund comments:

“We thought of linking it to a local charity that helps people stuck in conflicts or war. That’s how we as a team decided to choose ‘War Child’, which aims to change the fate of millions of children who are stuck in war. We associated this with the recent events that took place in Europe, particularly Paris.”

Trident Media spoke to one of the Fashion students, Kelly Bisgrove, who had her work showcased. She revealed that anyone from Level 5 could have their work displayed and then a final six-figure lineup was chosen. Bisgrove designed and made her pieces herself and explained that she was very nervous about the show beforehand. She also went on to say how proud she was of her achievements.

The Event Management team continued to involve the UH student community. Models for the evening included Study Abroad student Arin Rose, Business Management student Tobi Sho-Silva and Graphic Design student Rianne Jones, only some of which had previous modelling experience.

The evening also included some extra entertainment to add to the flow, once again offering opportunities to Herts students. Law student Niki Loannou sang a selection of songs as did Engineering student Tayo Adedipe. Student, Diana, also provided some dance ensembles for guests.

Lund expressed that the event was a great success:

“We achieved most of our objectives and the attendance of guests at the event was good. There were some hiccups but at the end, it was all worth it. We managed to raise £643.00 and the credit of all this would go to the whole team including, fashion students, host, models, performers, volunteers, photographers, DJ, Study Abroad team, our lecturers, Trident Media, the hair and make-up artists and the lovely audience. Thank you to all of them.”

Fashion lecturer, Annie Shellard, also shared her praise for the success of the evening and the hard work from the Event Management students. She told the students:

“It has been good watching you work; your approach has been very professional from the outset. I commend you for your patience dealing with the 2nd year fashion students. Your persistence in encouraging them to take part in your event won over in the end, it is hard to convince a group of people to work together when they are unsure of the advantage to themselves, so well done!”

Another great accomplishment for University of Hertfordshire students.
