An email, promoting a fine art talk with Henry Offeh, mistakenly shared the personal details of 2,000 students in the School of Creative Arts at the university’s College Lane Campus, according to the BBC.
An investigation is being carried out, regarding the now recalled email, and relevant students have been made aware of the situation. While the university has reported they “are contacting all affected students with information and advice”.
In the meantime, the university has said they will continue to take data protection for students “extremely seriously”, and have contacted the information commissioner’s office, at data protection agency Watchdog.
The university is required to protect student and staff data, as part of the Data Protection Act 2018. It ensures the university follows the principles of the act; which makes sure personal information is treated correctly.
This will see that personal information consists of “Lawfulness, fairness and transparency, purpose limitation, data minimisation, accuracy, storage limitation, integrity and confidentiality (security) and accountability” as listed on the university’s data protection page.
