My Mad Fat Diary is the E4 comedy-drama series based on the book My Fat, Mad Teenage Diary written by Rae Earl. The series launched in 2013, with a second series last year. Now Rae and the gang are back on our screens for a fabulous final series.

What makes My Mad Fat Diary such a success is its tackling of serious subjects with just the right amount of entertaining anecdotes. Set in Lincolnshire in the 1990’s, we follow the tale of music-mad Rae Earl, who returns to teenage life after spending four months in a psychiatric hospital. Rae is reunited with her best friend Chloe, who introduces her to “The Gang” – Finn, Archie, Izzy and Chop.

You’ve got plenty of teenage angst, body image issues, relationships, sex, friendships, family and more, with the undertone of Rae’s ongoing battle with mental health issues. It’s a stark and honest depiction of mental health; held high and tackled with a brilliant sense of humour.

The characters are all relatable and endearing, each bringing something to the story. For those who have read the book, Sharon Rooney is also a great fit for Rae. She said:

“It has been a privilege to tell Rae’s story. My Mad Fat Diary has been a huge part of my life and, although I am sad that this amazing rollercoaster ride is almost over, it’s not over YET. We have more drama, more tears and more rude bits to bring you. The support of the E4 audience has been amazing, and I couldn’t have done it without them. So, in the words of Rae, ‘LET’S DO THIS’.”

Catch up for the final series

For those of you who haven’t stayed up-to-date with My Mad Fat Diary, at the end of the last series Rae was finally getting the hang of things. We saw her reconciling her friendship with Chloe and her relationship with her mother and new step-dad, before getting back together with on-off boyfriend Finn.

In this third and final series, it’s 1998 and the gang are preparing for their last summer together, before each embarking on their own futures. The biggest question of all, after the tough time, but ultimately successful college experience, will Rae go to university, and what will this mean for her relationship with Finn? In this series we are also promised a new addition to the gang, played by Fresh Meat and Glue actress Faye Marsey.

Aired on Monday night, the first episode brought My Mad Fat Diary back with a bang. We faced the potential end of therapy for Rae, Archie’s first gay encounter, and a heart wrenching ending. I was sitting on the edge of my seat screaming for more, and will probably keep having flashbacks right up until the next episode.
