Movember: The return of the hairy month

[Shelby Loasby | Head of Print]

The hairy month of Movember is upon us! It’s time for all the hairy men out there to unite to change the face of men’s health and to raise vital funds and awareness for men around the globe.

For those of you who don’t know what Movember is:

The Movember Foundation is a global men’s health charity that disrupts the status quo and advocates for men. They aim to have an everlasting impact and to change the face of men’s health. Too many men dont talk, dont take action and die too young.

The whole ethos behind Movember is to help men live a happier, healthier, and longer life!

The Movember Foundation has raised over £402 million since 2003 and has helped over 1000 programmes focusing on men’s health. The four key programmes of men’s health that Movember focus on are; prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health, and physical inactivity. Prostate and Testicular cancer are the most common caner’s for men in the world, with 1 in 7 men being diagnosed in their lifetime. Mental health is also a huge issue, with suicide being the biggest killer of men aged between 20-39. Movember are fighting for a world where no man dies due to these factors and they can only do this with your help!

How can you get involved?

There’s so many ways to raise money and awareness with the Movember Foundation. First things first, sign up to the website! Just go to, sign up and create your ‘Mo Space’ and then add yourself to the University of Hertfordshire’s network!

Once you’re set up you can start raising money and awareness by:

Being a Mo Bro

  1. Shaving your facial hair on November 1st and growing a moustache for 30 days

  2. Take part in physical activity every day of November as part of the Foundation’s new initiative MOVE

  3. Talking to family members and other bros about their health

  4. Going for a check up at the docs

  4. Hold your own mini event to raise money – maybe a bake sale

You can also get involved by downloading the Movember app and game; Run Mo Run. It’s free to download and play on your phone, and any in-game purchases will support the Movember foundation.

There will also be plenty of activities and events happening around the university this month so keep your eyes peeled for how to get involved!
