Film Review: Gone Girl

Award winning director David Fincher (Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) returns with one of this year’s most anticipated thrillers. Adapted from the crime novel of the same name by author Gillian Flynn, Gone Girl sees Argo star and future Batman Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne, a despairing husband who, after the sudden disappearance of his wife, becomes the prime suspect of a police investigation. As his claim to innocence becomes increasingly doubtful, he also becomes prime bait for tabloid media vultures.

The film is dotted with unexpected comedy moments that leave you unprepared for the subtly layered twist after gut-knotting twist which leave behind more frustrating questions than answers. Rosamund Pike (Jack Reacher, The World’s End) delivers a chilling performance as the aloof Amy Dunne, whose story intertwines with her husband’s to unravel the twisted, disquieting truth behind her disappearance.

Fincher brings with him Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to provide the soundtrack. Past collaborations between the Grammy award-winning musical duo and the director include The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Reznor and Ross’ ethereal and subdued industrial sounds add to the pervasive sense of creeping unease, tying the highly polished and visually stunning cinematography together effortlessly with immersive and atmospheric audio.

Gone Girl glides along with an easy, stylish nonchalance; its pacing masks its near two hour and 45 minute running time without dragging or becoming threadbare. In true Fincher form, the mystery is steeped in the sticky, grey areas of human nature. In a society where perception is king, are deception and façade necessary evils? It forces us ask the question: do we truly know what the people we trust are capable of?

With rumours already circulating about Oscar nominations, Gone Girl is definitely worth your attention.
