Doing something new in the New Year?

With the New Year comes New Year’s resolutions, but we all know keeping these can be difficult – especially when we’re so busy. With roughly 41 per cent of people failing to keep their resolutions last year, here are some of the most common resolutions and how our societies could help you keep them.

1. Exercise more

Probably the most common resolution is to get fit, exercise more and have a body as toned as Beyoncé, but, come the end of January, the gyms will begin to empty out again. Why not try something different to motivate you and keep you going like joining the Muscle and Athletic Sport Society or the Rounders Society?

2. Eat better

Now this one goes hand in hand with the first resolution and can fall under the category of generally being healthier. Make your parents proud and learn how to cook some amazingly healthy foods. Vegetarian/Vegan Society and Nutrition & Dietetics Society can help you out.

3. Learn a new language

With English being one of the top most commonly spoken languages in the World, us Brits rarely make the effort to learn the language when we head on our holidays. Broaden your horizons and learn a new language as one of your resolutions have a look at French Speaking Society and German Society.

4. Learn to bake

Let’s face it we all want to be able to bake a Lemon Drizzle like Mary Berry or make a ciabatta that would blow Paul Hollywood’s socks off. Try your hand at baking and impress your mates with your delicious creations at the Baking Society.

5. Travel more

It starts with stepping out of your comfort zone. Make a resolution to see the world this year… or maybe just explore a bit more of the UK with Huskis: Ski and Snowboard or Outdoors Society.

6. Learn to play a musical instrument

Playing a musical instrument is a great way to show off your creativity. Not only that but you’d be surprised how much concentration and coordination it takes! Get your brain going and make learning an instrument like the Ukulele one of your resolutions.

7. Learn something new or develop a new hobby

Learning any new skill can be a really easy resolution to make and keep. There is a great sense of satisfaction of learning something new and being able to complete smaller tasks to meet your goal. Even just developing a new hobby and socialising more is a great way to enjoy your time away from your studies, Pole & Aerial Society, Film Society and KPop Society can help you out there.

Those are just some of the most common resolutions and ways our societies can help you stick to your goals. If you’re interested in joining any of our societies there is a list on the Students’ Union website or come along to the Refreshers fair on 22nd January to speak to the societies yourself!
