Bonfire Night- 5th November

[Krystyna King | Events Secretary]

‘Remember, remember, the fifth of November,

The Gunpowder Treason and plot.

I know of no reason why the Gunpowder Treason

Should ever be forgot.’

Bonfire Night is usually celebrated on the 5th November by having a firework display/bonfire. It is to mark the day of the Gunpowder Plot. In 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes and his group of accomplices attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London, with barrels of gunpowder placed in the basement. They wanted to kill King James and the King’s leaders, but failed when Fawkes was discovered and arrested. There is now a tradition of searching the cellars before the opening of every session of Parliament.
