BeautyCon London Festival 2016

By Judith Turkson-Baidoo – Contributing Writer

BeautyCon Festival is an annual event that takes place in London. The festival also takes place in Dallas, LA and New York and celebrates anything to do with fashion, make-up, discussions, brands and content creators such as YouTubers.

BeautyCon London was held on Saturday 3rd December 2016 at Olympia, West London. I attended for the first time as I was interested to discover what the event was all about, and I watch YouTube videos on make-up and beauty.  I bought myself a General Admission ticket where I got access to panel discussions, meet and greets, and beauty lifestyle brands. The other packages were Hauler and Social; pricewise they were more expensive, but you would receive a free bag and free goodies as well as the meet and greets etc.

The event was a bit more than expected as there were stands of beauty brands such as L’Oreal Paris, MAC, NYX, Lime Crime, Soap and Glory, and many more. These stands had try-on samples available for guests to try out especially with L’Oreal Paris where I had the opportunity to meet Emily Canham, a beauty blogger and Youtuber and received a free sample of the highlighter cream. Another option was to purchase make-up from not just L’oreal alone but other brands as I have already mentioned. Unfortunately I was expecting more free samples will be available to take from different brands and personally it would have made the event more interesting, especially offering more to those who purchased a General Admission ticket.

Throughout the day, panel discussions ran and I managed to watch a few of them especially one talk called The Changing Face of Beauty, moderated by Jay Manuel, a make-up artist well known from America’s Next Top Model. My favourite YouTubers included Chanel Ambrose and Grace Victory, and the topic was discussed on the definition of beauty that it is not just about a pretty face or a perfect body, it is about personality and the good qualities people have to define them as beautiful in their own way. As I have followed Grace Victory’s channel for over two years, gaining understanding of how real she is has inspired me to appreciate her more as a person, not that she has discussed about her personal issues she had to experience, but she would like to see people to collaborate with people with learning or physical disabilities. Taking into consideration about this topic, clearly it does mean more diversity because of the society we live in today, we are still in the process of tackling race and culture and other issues. Therefore, more issues need to be raised in order to help and inspire other people.

Would I recommend this event? Yes, anybody can go, especially if people are into beauty and blogging definitely this is the event for them, or for people who would like to meet and greet bloggers like I did. Here are the YouTube channels suggested below so please check them out:
