An Evening with the Orchestra: de Havilland Philharmonic

[Alexandra Jungeling | Contributing Writer]

All year I have been planning to go and see the de Havilland Philharmonic Orchestra, every time I would hear they would be performing soon and I would always be so excited to go and see them, and then the day would pass by and I forgot to go. Finally, on the 10th of May, I actually remembered to get a ticket, and I picked a very good evening for my first viewing.

It was a Magic of Broadway special, so along with the usual orchestra, there were four guest vocalists, two male and two female. I, myself, am a huge fan of all things musical, so I picked a very good night to go, but the orchestra was spectacular and the singers were fantastic, just in general, musical fan or not. Some pieces were performed by the orchestra alone, and the vocalists varied, so there really was something for everyone.

The music ranged from older classics, such as the overture for ‘Singing in the Rain’, up to perhaps the more well known ‘Wicked’. The finale of the evening was an incredible performance of ‘One Day More’ from the musical ‘Les Miserables’, with all the vocalists and a full orchestra, and was a truly wonderful end to the evening, as I’m sure all who saw it would agree. I know the people I was with certainly enjoyed the evening and would highly recommend it too.

For anyone who has been before, you would know just how impressive the orchestra really are. It’s an opportunity not to be missed, especially as it’s very cheap for students, costing just £8 for UH students, where a normal ticket would cost £20.

The next performance is June 21st, which it is a summer festival inspired by nature, and I imagine it will be a brilliant end to the season, I certainly plan to go.
